Description: A select team of 9 Upper School students is participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics challenge this year. They are tasked with designing, building, and programming a robot to accomplish specific tasks on a playing field within a specific time frame. This year’s theme is “Ring It Up!” The game is played on a 12’x12’ diamond shaped field. Two alliances comprised of two teams each, compete in matches consisting of a 30 second autonomous period followed by a two-minute driver controlled period. The object of the game is to score more points than your opponent’s alliance by placing plastic rings onto pegs on the center rack. Teams will also be challenged to detect special “weighted” rings to earn a special multiplier bonus. The Rivermont Collegiate FTC team will compete at the Putnam Museum on February 2, 2013.

Chess Class
Instructor: Roger Kromphardt
Contact Information: roharo@aol.com
Rivermont offers beginner and advanced chess classes with chess master, Roger Kromphardt. Sessions include 6 classes and are offered 2 to 3 times per school year. Playing chess can dramatically improve rational thinking, cognitive skills, raise grade levels (especially in English and Math studies), and teach students the value of team work, concentration and commitment. Please stay tuned to the Rivermont calendar (www.rvmt.org/calendar) for future class offerings.
Mr. Kromphardt offers private chess lessons and can be contacted directly at roharo@aol.com.
Martial Arts Class

He has a brown belt in Karate, blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and third degree black belt in Arnis. This new after school class will touch on all of these, but mainly focus on sword fighting. The swords are made of flexible PVC pipe with a soft, foam insulation wrapped around it (it's sort of like Star Wars lightsabers!) Please stay tuned to the Rivermont calendar (www.rvmt.org/calendar) for future class offerings.
