History Day

Making Their Own History

Rivermont Collegiate students have been selected from among 3,500 contestants to advance to the state National History Day competition in Des Moines, Iowa. Two junior division projects will compete at the state junior division finals on April 28, 2008: a paper on Anthony Burns and the Boston Resistance: Paradigm of the Divisive Fugitive Slave Act, and a group performance on William Wilberforce: The Man Who Made Them See. In addition, two senior division groups will move on to the state senior division finals on May 5, 2008. The first group placed with their website IBM and the Holocaust: The Dark Side of Modern Technology (check out their electrifying website at www.korworks.com), and the second group placed with their impressive exhibit and presentation on Uganda’s Struggle for Survival: A Compromise in Waiting.

National History Day is a year-long academic enrichment program which allows students the opportunity to work individually or collaboratively in groups of two to five. It also encourages them to use primary, secondary, community and statewide resources on a subject of their choice related to the 2008 theme “Conflict and Compromise in History.” The National History Day competition is yet another demonstration of Rivermont students answering the call for excellence and maximizing their potential.
