Rivermont Collegiate

Where students develop Intellect, Character, and Creativity.

Alumni

Our Legacy

The school celebrates a proud history beginning in 1884. Alumni come from St. Katharine’s School (affectionately know as St. Kit’s), St. Katharine’s – St. Mark’s School, and now Rivermont Collegiate. Throughout its evolution, the school has always encouraged its students to set high goals from themselves in character and academics. As a result, St. Kit’s founding motto"By Pureness, By Knowledge” echoes still in Rivermont’s motto, “Intellect, Character, Creativity”.

Archival History

Rivermont has begun archiving school photos, memories and achievements from alumni, former faculty, and former staff to document the magnificent history of the school. We need your help-please send any/all contributions to alumni@rvmt.org

Nick Petre, Class of 2009, recently helped organize a suture seminar on the Augustana College campus in Rock Island, IL to introduce students to the medical field and connect them with area physicians. Nick is current president of Augustana’s chapter of Beta Beta Beta, a national biological honor society, which sponsored the event. Students attending the seminar learned different stitching patterns and suturing methods required by different kinds of surgery. About 100 students attended the seminar, where 11 area doctors taught them how to suture cuts on pigs’ feet. Current Rivermont students Summer Lawrence and Alejandra Martinez attended the seminar. The seminar was featured on KWQC –TV6, WQAD Channel 8, and in the Quad City Times.

Nick, a biochemistry, physics, and pre-med major at Augustana, says he always knew he wanted to be a doctor; both of his parents are physicians. “It’s not very common for undergrads to have this kind of opportunity. There are a lot of things at Augie that are like that. We have a cadaver lab that Augie students can participate in their senior year and that’s the only cadaver lab for undergraduates in the state.”

Angela Cummins (maiden name Bahls), Class of 2009, recently spent five weeks in Cambodia during a study abroad term. Prior to the trip, she spent five weeks studying Cambodian history and culture at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, where she is a student (Class of 2013). Angie’s study abroad group visited temples and many NGOs (non-governmental organizations), including the Elephant Valley Project, where abused elephants are rehabilitated. She also snorkeled in the Gulf of Thailand and says the experience was a blast!

Manisha Kumar, Class of 2009, was recently awarded an internationally competitive Sigma Xi Grant in Aid of Research to fund her investigation of cold-hardiness in a freeze-tolerant animal. Manisha, a biology/pre-med major (Class of 2013) at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, is a research assistant under Dr. Tim Muir, Assistant Biology Professor. The two are investigating hatchling painted turtles’ ability to survive freezing temperatures by supercooling (when body fluids cool below the freezing point without solidifying or crystallizing). As Dr. Muir explains, “Presently, the medical community is not able to freeze single human organs and have them viable for transplant after thawing. These hatchling turtles can recover from having every organ in their bodies frozen simultaneously. Uncovering the mechanisms underlying that remarkable ability will inform new methods in medical cryopreservation.” Manisha’s grant award is truly impressive given a low funding rate (20%) and the fact that most proposals are submitted by M.S. and Ph.D. candidates. Congrats!

Rivermont is sad to announce the passing of Mary Ann Broders on February 17, 2012. Mrs. Broders was mother of Leigh Ann Schroeder (Fifth Grade Teacher), previous employee, and most importantly, a dear friend of the School. Mary Ann's full obituary may be viewed on the QC Times website by clicking here: Mary Ann Broders.

Mrs. Sue Johnson fondly remembers Mary Ann with the following:
Mary Ann started as a 'full time' volunteer when Leigh Ann was in Kindergarten and then she became a fixture in the business office. Mary Ann handled all the receivables and was the go-to person for parent-messages and any student needs. She took the money at lunch and was the school nurse and secretary. She did it all. Mary Ann did it all with a sense of humor that tickled us all. She was serious about her work and took each detail as important but she could be playful.

Mary Ann dressed up at Halloween to the delight of all the students. Two years stand out, once she dressed as a cheerleader and for the 100th anniversary party she dressed as a nun. She decorated our offices for our birthdays and she kept the main floor of the mansion clean and spotless in a time before we had a cleaning crew. I remember seeing her always with a dust rag in her hand, finishing a quick wipe of a table.

Science Instructor, Linda Hampton remembers Mary Ann with the following:

Mary Ann Broders was in the business office when I first started at St. Katharines/St.Marks School twenty eight years ago. She was a kind, generous, and helpful lady. There was never a day if I stopped by the office that she didn’t ask about my family or ask me how I was doing in my new position as science teacher.

She was genuinely very kind hearted. I remember in the early days of the all-school Academic Fair, Mary Ann always made sure there were pitchers of iced tea and lemonade and plates loaded with cookies in the corner of the gym to be sure all of our judges (and stressed students) could relax a bit and enjoy her sweet treats. She wasn’t just “Leigh Ann’s mom”, she was a friend to all who knew her.

Former Rivermont Collegiate Board of Trustees Member, Mr. Thomas Getz, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012. Tom served on the Board of Trustees from 1996 until 2004. He also served the School as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and the Marketing Committee. Tom's full obituary may be viewed on the QC Times website by clicking here: Thomas Getz.

St. Katharine's Alumna, Mrs. Martha Getz (Cogswell) passed away suddenly but peacefully on November 22, 2011, after a very brief bout with cancer. Martha's full obituary may be viewed on the QC Times website by clicking here: Martha Getz Cogswell Obituary.

St. Katharine's 1935 Alumna, Mrs. Virginia Campbell (Fox) passed away March 27, 2011 in Spotsylvania, VA, after a brief illness. Gini's full obituary may be viewed at nj.com.

With deepest sadness, Rivermont Collegiate mourns the passing of beloved alumna Mary Waterman Gildehaus (’65) on Sunday, November 29, 2009. Mary’s vibrant and exuberant spirit brought laughter and joy to all those fortunate enough to know her during her years at St. Kits. Mary, or “Win Win,” was known for her infectious enthusiasm and love for Tigers as well as her outgoing membership in School activities.

Mary’s love and dedication to the School continued far beyond her years as a student, for she was a long-standing member of Parents’ Council, the Board of Trustees, and an ardent supporter of School events and projects for over forty years.

Teachers and students alike knew Mary on a personal level, because of her gift for making every person feel special and important, no matter their age. Often, as Mary walked up the main staircase to attend a Board meeting, she would stop in each classroom to greet teachers with her warm smile and easy laughter.

During her years at the School in the role of parent, Mary was known as the “go-to” person because whenever something was needed, she was there. Whether it be driving the students for a field trip, staying up all night to bake cookies for a party, or cooking a delicious meal for the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon, Mary’s generous and caring spirit was there.

Students and faculty remember Mary as our "Garden Master". For several days every spring and fall, Mary would arrive on campus in her bib overalls with her tools and garden gloves to tend her beloved plants. Students fondly remember her wheelbarrow as Mary took loads of giggling youngsters around the circle for rides. Recess had to be lengthened on “Mary days” so everyone could have a turn.

As student, parent, trustee, friend – Mary taught us that one person truly does make a difference. Mary's full obituary may be viewed at qctimes.com.

In her senior year she was in the Riding Club, Dramatic Club, and she was Class Treasure. Barbara also played Monsieur Fleurant in the Senior Play The Imaginary Invalid. Additionally, Barbara was best known at St. Katherine’s for her popularity with the U.S.N.; in fact, she hoped to one day become Lieutenant Senior Grade of the Wave Reserve.
